Cologne Water Softener Rebate Program

Funding is available to upgrade your water softener!
Help protect Benton Lake by upgrading your water softener! Carver County is piloting a new water softener rebate program in Cologne to improve the efficiency of water softeners. Replace your timer-initiated water softener with a more salt efficient demand-initiated softener to save money and prevent chloride pollution in our lakes and streams.

Why do we need more efficient water softeners?
Water softening salt is a major freshwater pollutant in Carver County. These salts cannot be removed by wastewater treatment facilities, so they flow directly into lakes and streams. High chloride levels from salt are toxic to freshwater life. Unfortunately, it is impossible to safely and cost-effectively remove chloride from the water once it enters lakes and streams. Reducing our salt use is the only way to prevent chloride pollution from harming our water.

Benton Lake in Cologne has one of the highest chloride concentrations in Carver County.

This lake drains into Carver Creek, which carries polluted water

into the Minnesota River. You have the power to help protect Minnesota lakes and streams by reducing your salt use.
